The Black Horse, Hose
Our ramblings take us to Hose and The Black Horse,
a terrific
locals'
pub with good beer, a separate restaurant and value for money
food, from a
welcoming landlord, Mick, altogether creating what a good
village pub should be.
Internally, architecturally interesting with some original
features, the pub dates c1850, having a cantering wrought iron
black horse hanging over the front door. The bar is superb, with
early fixed bench seating, painted back panels & quarry tiled
floor and an Off Sales servery, which was still in use on the evening
we visited.
The Lounge looks older than it is.
Nevertheless, it has a fine
curved segmental bar, a brick fireplace and panelling that dates
from possibly the 1880's.The restaurant panelling is only some 15-20
years old, although of good quality, but has an unusual and
striking brick fireplace.
There are many original doors and glass, but the
new front windows by Tynemill were not a good idea. A piece of the
original stained glass window rests in a frame on the restaurant
fireplace.
A visit to this pub is highly recommended.
