Wicked Hathern Brewery
Visit
Having visited Langton
Brewery on Monday 26th June 2006, just two days Later on
the 28th, 17 of us descended upon The Wicked
Hathern Brewery in Hathern, just north of Loughborough on the A6.
Not easy to find, but we found it eventually.
On arrival we
were greeted by two of the three owners, John Bagley and Sean
O’Neil, John Worsfold was on holiday. After we had all been given a
pint, Sean told us a few interesting facts about their Brewery. All
three of them had the desire to take up their hobby on a serious
note, so they set up a brewery in the garage at John Bagley’s house.
It opened on 28th January 2000, being the first news item
on the front page of The Loughborough Echo for the new
Millennium.
They have a 2 ½
barrel plant and brew once or twice a week, just enough to pay for
their holidays. They produce a house beer for one of their best
customers, The Albion, Canal Bank, Loughborough, along with The Earl
Of Harrington at Thurlston, a beer that won an award at this year’s
Leicester Beer Festival.
Their beers can
also be found at Hathern Post Office, Delilah Fine Foods of
Nottingham, and Alexander Wines Coventry. They produce Bottle
Conditioned (Real Ale In A Bottle) versions of all of their beers.
One that they were particularly proud of was Golden Reign in 2002 to
commemorate the Queens Golden Jubilee. Only a handful of these
bottles remain and are being saved for the owners to give to their
children tooo sample when they reach 18years of age.
They are
currently looking for premises within Hathern to move to, expanding
their 2½ barrel plant to 6 barrel. They also intend to employ a
brewer once they have moved. We all had an excellent evening with
Sean and John, our thanks go to them for their
hospitality.
K Williams.
