Meet the Publican - The Aberdale, Leicester

This time for meet The Publican, we are in Leicester, but only just. We are at The Aberdale, Shackerdale Road, Leicester to meet Brian Morris.  He was born in July 1956 in Doncaster Royal Infirmary to parents Sheila and Mervin.

Brian attended Mayflower Infant and Junior Schools at Bawtry and Edlington Comprehensive School at Edlington. In 1972, he left school to join the Royal Navy. This was for a very short spell. He then became a joiner for T&H Hopkins in Retford for 3 years. At this time, while at The Ranch, a nightclub in Mattersey, he met Lynne Isaac, a girl whom he began to court. He then left his job to emigrate to Canada, to see if life was better there. Lynne soon wrote to him, the content of which saw him return to the UK straight away.

In 1976, he bought a milk round in Maltby. He worked with Lynne on the round and proposed to her on the round. They married in June 1977 at Bawtry Church. The milk round was sold in 1978 and Brian returned to joinery until 1993 when they took their first pub. He became Assistant Manager at The Victoria Hotel with Mansfield Brewery.

They carried out a number of relief duties until January 1994 when they ran a number of pubs including The Lion & Snake in Lincoln for 3 months, The Sawmill at Newark for 2 years, Maplewells Inn, Sutton In Ashfield for a year and in June 1997 to The Fox Inn at Nuneaton where they stayed for 6 years.

In 2003, when Mansfield Brewery had been taken over by Wolverhampton & Dudley Breweries, they left the company to work as steward and stewardess for Stockingford  Allotment Association until 2005, when they returned to the Licensed trade by moving to Leicester to run The Aberdale, where they are today. They turned the pub around and have just had a complete refurbishment from Everards.

Brian and Lynne share the same 2 hobbies, Golf and Holidays. They have 2 children, Katie 29 and Sean 27. Why not call in The Aberdale and see for yourself how the pub has improved.

K Williams.
