Meet the Publican
-The Black Horse, Leicester (2009)
We are back in the
city for this issue’s “Meet The Publican”. A new face to pubs,
but not to beer, we visit The Black Horse, Foxon Street,
Leicester to talk to Peter Green, the new Licensee there.
Peter was born in a Nursing Home in Colchester in 1950 to parents
Albert and Audrey. He attended Shaftesbury Park Primary and Junior
Schools in Battersea, London, and Wandsworth School until leaving
in 1968.
His first job was with ICI London Sales Office, where he worked for
4 years marketing PVC products. In 1972, he moved to another
division of the company, Yorkshire Imperial Metals as a Salesman,
selling copper tubes etc.
In 1979, Peter Managed his first pub. The Crocodile in Danehill,
Sussex as a Tenant for Bass Charrington. Peter claims that this was
the only pub with this name in the UK. In 1981, he moved to
Scottish & Newcastle as a Free Trade Salesman. He went on to gain
promotion through a number of Management roles, becoming Sales
Training Manager.
In
1990, Peter moved to Everards Brewery Ltd in Narborough as Free
Trade Manager, later gaining promotion to National Accounts Sales
Manager. While he was with Everards, he was also responsible for
sourcing beers for The Olde English Ale Club, which supplies
Everards pubs with their guest beers. While he was here, he met
Heidi Altenhofen while drinking in The Plough at Littlethorpe. They
married in Competa, Spain in July 2007.
Peter took early retirement from Everards in April 2006. He asserts
to have done very little since, apart from a small amount of work
for Tom Woods Brewery, until being approached by Everards earlier
this year with a view to taking The Black Horse, Leicester. This he
did on 20th April this year on a temporary basis and has
taken to the pub like a duck to water. We are confident and hopeful
that he will take it permanently as Peter brings a note of
sartorial elegance to the pub.
Peter has 3 children, Oliver 29, Daniel 27 and Emily 25. His
interests are playing golf, walking the dog and not to forget his
favourite one “Drinking Good Beer” The Black Horse remains a 2
roomed traditional friendly local in a wine bar dominated area. Why
not call in for a beer.
