Meet the Publican - The
Donkey
We return
to Leicester for this edition of Meet The Publican. Warren James
McDonald is the Licensee at The Donkey on Welford Road,
Leicester (formerly Storks Head and Fuzzock & Firkin).
He was
born at Selly Oak hospital in the West Midlands on 5th
May 1968 to parents Christine and Colin. He attended St Lawrence
schools in Bournville followed by Bournville Secondary until
leaving in 1984.
His first
job was at his uncle’s nightclub, Holy City Zoo in Birmingham,
where he stocked the bar and other daytime jobs. This lasted for
four years until he went on to run many pubs and clubs in the
Birmingham area. Some include Pen & Wig, The West End and Kings
Head in Birmingham. He then travelled the world for three years
from 1993 to 1996. He returned to England and worked at The
Manor House, Withington and The Bank in Manchester before moving
to Leicester running bars for Leicester University, during which
time in 1997, he met Lisa Westbury. She became his partner to
the present day,
At this
point, he took on The Dog & Topper in Nottingham for Hardys and
Hansons, moving to The Counting House in Leicester in 1999. A
move to The Donkey in March 2005 brings us up to the present
day.
Warren and
Lisa have a daughter, Hope is now 8 years of age. His interests
include walking, climbing, travelling, live music and drinking
Real Ale. He recently walked the Leicestershire Round with his
mate Andrew Barratt. This was a hundred mile walk over four days
around the outskirts of Leicestershire, starting and ending in
Saddington. They raised £1,300.00 for LOROS.
