Meet the Publican - The Red Lion, Gilmorton

This time, we are in rural Leicestershire to meet Adrienne King at The Red Lion, Gilmorton. Adrienne was born Adrienne Elizabeth Bell in April 1953 at Norwich & Norfolk Hospital in Norwich to parents Gabrielle and Hansell.

Her first school was Great Yarmouth Convent Infants School. She attended many schools across the country due to her father’s work requiring regular re-locating. Places include, Sussex, Essex, Hampshire, and Kingston Upon Hull. They eventually moved to Catthorpe in Leicestershire. She completed school at Lutterworth Grammar School, from where she left in 1971 having achieved 3 A Levels. A further 3 years were then spent at Birmingham College of Food and where she gained an HND in Hotel and Catering Management, with distinction.  She joined Trust House Forte as a Management Trainee after graduating, working in several top London hotels.

In 1975, she became Assistant Catering Manager at The Albany Inn, Crick for a year, moving to Rugby Lions FC in Rugby as House Manager for 3 years.

From early 1980 until 2006, she had many sales roles first in the grocery industry and then into fashion, but her love of catering led her to look for change. She looked at numerous pubs on offer by various pub co’s, but settled for The Red Lion in Gilmorton in May 2006. Adrienne has 2 children, Richard 25 and James 27 and when not hard at work, she likes to go swimming do gardening and despite running her pub kitchen, she also enjoys cooking.

Adrienne enjoys the challenge of running a pub and strives to offer a good range of beers, despite her tie to Marstons and their limited guest beer list. Beer Festivals are also held a couple of times a year. The Red Lion is definitely an oasis for beer drinkers in the area. Why not give it a visit to see for yourself.

K Williams.
