Meet the Publican - The Star & Garter, Wigston
We stay south of the county for
this issue’s Meet The Publican. We call in at "The Star &
Garter" in Wigston Magna, to meet Julian Watson.
Julian was born at Listerdale
Hospital in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, in October 1968 to parents
Mick and Margaret. He attended Ferham Infants and Juniors School in
Rotherham and then Kimberworth Comprehensive. He left in 1985, to
start work at his first job at H B Clarkes Brewery in their
Sheffield Distribution Depot. After 6 years, he decided to move
from the brewery side, taking on his first pub, The "Cat &
Cabbage", a John Smiths house. The Cat & Cabbage emblem was that of
The Yorkshire and Lancashire Regiment. While he was at this pub, he
met Karen Tomlinson, who managed it and with whom he eventually
moved in.
A
year later in 1992, a move to a Freehouse,The "Royal Standard Of
England" in Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire. A year later, to "The
Coach & Horses" in Hampstead, for a further 2 years. During this
time, Julian and Karen were married on a Caribbean beach in St
Lucia.
A return to Yorkshire for their next
job, a nightclub-bar back in Rotherham, which they did for 8 years
until the urge for something better, led them to look for another
pub. They noticed pubs on offer in Leicestershire and contacted
Everards Brewery Ltd., who eventually offered them The Star &
Garter on Leicester Road, Wigston Magna. They accepted and moved
there in May 2006 and are there to the present day.
They have 2 children, Connor aged 11
and Molly aged 9. They also have a 10 week-old chocolate Labrador
dog named Izzy. Julian says his interests are Football, Golf and
Beer (in no particular order) while Karen enjoys shopping - well
someone has to spend their hard earned money!
Why not call in to The Star & Garter
soon and join them for a pint or two.
K Williams.
