Derbyshire Revisited
Our second trip to Derbyshire took place on Saturday 12th May. I
was very pleased with the response, taking 46 people on the
coach from Leicester.
We left at 10.00am for our enroute for Glossop, where we arrived at
approximately 12.15pm. The Good Beer Guide has five entries for
the town. I personally only visited The Old Gloveworks,
primarily to eat but did sample, out of the five beers on, a
pint of Phoenix White Monk. I was told the Sam Smiths at the
Crown Inn was only £1.25 a pint. Words fail me!!
In my mind the gem of the whole trip was the Globe, also in Glossop. It
normally does not open until 5.00pm, but he especially opened at
1.00pm for our group so I asked our party to support him and was
pleased at the response. He had five Globe beers on, ranging
from Amber 3.8% through to Paleface at 5.3%, which only cost
£2.00 a pint. I would like to thank Ron Brooks the Landlord for
his hospitality and believe me, I will be back. It was a gem!
We then set of for Hayfield where the town was decorated for the May Queen
celebrations. During our short stop the group either visited the
Kinder Lodge, recommended to me by the High Peak CAMRA Branch,
or the Good Beer Guide entry, The Royal Hotel, where I managed
to sample two Howard Town brews from Glossop. Longendale Light
3.7% and Bleaklow 3.8%.
After about 45 minutes drive, we arrived at Ashover, The Old Poet’s Corner,
a place I had been looking forward to visiting. There were eight
beers on for our visit including their own Malthouse Mild and
Light Rale. Some people found another pub in the village, The
Black Swan, which sold Everards Tiger and 2 Thornbridge Hall
beers. I also found time to sample the excellent ice cream in
the local shop. Bakewell tart flavour!
Soon it was time to move on to another favourite pub of mine, The Old Oak
Inn, Horsley Woodhouse. I personally sampled Bottlebrook Brewery
Full Moon 4.6% and Tempest 4.7%. I resisted temptation to sample
Black Bess at 7.4% brewed by the same brewery.
Our final pub was the award winning 2006
Pub of theYear, The Bell at Smalley but yours truly has no idea
what he sampled! I know this, everywhere we went we had
brilliant hospitality. I would remind everyone that all of the
five pubs we visited can be visited independently by public
transport, using a Derbyshire Wayfarer ticket.
