GOOD BEER GUIDE

Saddleworth & West Yorkshire Trip

Saturday 26 July 2008 saw yet another trip to Greater Manchester & W Yorks.

Our first stop was a revisit after a number of years to the Church Inn at Saddleworth home of the Saddleworth Brewery and also the Cross Keys a GBG entry. Most people opted to visit the Cross Keys first where 3 Lees beers were on. The Church Inn had 7 Saddleworth beers on including Mr Brown's Recession Bitter 3.8% at £1.10 a pint! - superb quality and price price.

I heard on the grapevine that The Sair at Linthwaite had stopped brewing but Ron personally assured me there would be 5 beers on for us. I was disappointed to find 3 on when we arrived and the quality was poor, this then went down to 2 beers. I sampled the Autumn Gold 4.5%.

L-R Church Inn, Cross Keys, The Sair and The Grove.  Below The Star L and The Rat & Ratchett R. All Keith Williams

The main purpose of the trip was The Star summer festival at Huddersfield but most people did a crawl visiting The Grove which had 16 beers on ranging in gravity from 3.4% - 5.9% price £2.20 - £2.50. I sampled Langham Special Draught 5.2% and Langham Hip Hop 4%. The Rat and Ratchet had 12 beers on between 3.4% - 5% £2.15 - £2.40. I sampled Empire Suit You Sir 4.2% and Ossett Yorkshire Glory 4.2% so in 2 pubs 28 different beers & we'd not reached the Star!

All I can say about The Star was both the bar & outside beer festival marquee were superb. There were some unusual brews smpled here such as Ulverston Laughing Gravy 4.0%, Allgates Pussy \Galore 4.4% and Amber Ales Barnes Wallis 4.0%.

As if we'd not had enough we finished the trip off with a visit to the West Riding Licensed Refreshment Room at Dewsbury railway Station. Sampled here was Anglo Dutch Gods Own Ale 4.0%.

Another superb day out and a well patronised trip. Thanks as always to Denis for getting us out and back safely.
