GOOD BEER GUIDE

Day Out to Shrewsbury and Bishops Castle

The Leicester CAMRA social calendar continues - on Saturday 16th April 2005 we were all gathered in Humberstone Gate as usual, on what promised to be a fine day weather wise.

Having departed on time, we stopped off at Burbage to pick more people up and then a trouble free journey to our first port of call, Shrewsbury. Although we had originally been scheduled to stop here for an hour, we had made good time travelling, giving us an extra 45 minutes here.

On arrival, Keith Satterly gave out maps with all the Good Beer Guide listed pubs marked on. With 5 to choose from, we all made for our favourite, although some didn’t open for an hour after we arrived. Many of the pubs were freehouses, but my own favourite was The Loggerheads on Church Street. This Banks’s pub has 5 beers on and is multi roomed. Unspoilt by progress, it is listed on CAMRA’s National Inventory.

Leaving Shrewsbury on time, we were heading to Bishops Castle, a journey ending with many narrow roads, not a regular bus route I wouldn’t have thought. On arrival at The Three Tuns, Jude and Mick greeted us. Jude was one of the partnership to re-create The Vaults in March 2004 as Out Of The Vaults on King Street Leicester. She moved to Bishops Castle with Mick late last year. The Three Tuns sells beers from the John Roberts Brewery next door that is run separately. There were 3 on during our visit.

During the afternoon, most of us ventured into the Village as there were 2 Good Beer Guide listed pubs, one being The Six Bells at the bottom of the long hill. There is a Brewery here with the pub selling 4 of their own beers.

By 5pm we were saying our goodbyes to Jude and Mick, now heading home but with a brief stop organised in Oakengates. With just an hour here, most of us visited The Crown Inn and The Station Hotel, two freehouses opposite each other.

As always on these trips, we arrive back in plenty of time to have another drink in town before going home. We arrived in Leicester at 9.45pm. Thanks go to Keith Satterly for another well organised and enjoyable day out, not forgetting Trevor our driver with Ausden Clark Travel. See you on the Norwich trip on July 9th.

K Williams.
