Leicester CAMRA Beer Festival 2002
The most recent festival was held from Thursday 21st to Saturday 23rd March 2002 at the Charotar Patidar Samaj.
51 beers from Leicestershire and Rutland and 27 from surrounding counties, including festival specials, were available. Real Cider and Perry, Bottled Beers, Indian
and English food etcetera. The festival was intended to support local breweries and small brewers from nearby counties. 96 firkins were ordered, up 20% on
2001 when we embarrassingly ran out on the Saturday evening.
For those who like statistics, here we go.
- 2,404 people attended – compared to 1650 in 2001.
- On the Friday 556 gallons were consumed by 1162 people, with a maximum of 700 people in the hall at any one time.
- 1196 gallons were ordered, of which 155 (13%) was ullage.
- 54 workers worked their socks off - well done and many thanks to them all!
- 96 different beers were sold.
- 140 firkins were ordered, 25 being on sale-or-return.
- 732 CAMRA members and 1672 non-members attended – a 30/70 split.
- Over 1000 filled cobs were sold - triple the amount of 2001.
Beer of the Festival
After the votes were counted it proved to be a close run contest. Oldershaws and Oakham dominated the vote but ultimately Grantham
Stout won by one vote over J.H.B. The two breweries also fought it out for third and fourth places. This time Oakham had the better when Harlequin came ahead
of Isaac's Gold. In fifth place was Grainstore Rutland Panther.
