City Map and Drinkers' Guide

When visiting Leicester, you might like might like to have a drink or two in the town. Here are a few pubs as guidance, but there are plenty more as well as these. These are a selection for all tastes and not all are up to CAMRA's standards. Happy Drinking!

ALE WAGON.  (Rutland Street / Charles Street, LE1 1RE)
Hoskins Brothers only tied house. Basic 30’s style interior. HOB, Mild and up to five other Hoskins Brother’s Beers, plus guests.

BARLEY MOW.  (149 Granby Street, LE1 6FB)
Fairly modern
Everard's tied house with 4 Everards beers and a guest .

GLOBE.  (43 Silver Street, LE1 5EU)
Everards' tied house with an excellent pub interior, popular with the young. Usually has 4 Everards beers, plus 3 guest beers.

HAT & BEAVER.
(Closed on 27th July 2006).

HIGHCROSS.  (Highcross Street, LE1 4JB)
J D Wetherspoon's – normally at least 3 Leicestershire beers on sale from Shardlow or Belvoir Breweries, plus usual beers.

HIND.  (London Road, LE2 0PD)
Festival Ale house, varied selection of beers. Almost opposite Railway Station.

SLUG & LETTUCE. (27 Market Street or Pocklingtons Walk, LE1 6DN)
Large, spacious, typical former Hog's Head now selling 5 real ales + LocAle.

LAST PLANTAGENET. (Granby Street, LE1 6FD)
J D Wetherspoon's – expect all you usually get in a 'spoons at this establishment.

LEICESTER GATEWAY. (52 Gateway Street, LE2 7DP)
(Closed).

BLACK HORSE. (Braunstone Gate / Foxon Street, LE3 5LT)
This Everard's pub has real character and sells real cider and 3 or more 'guest beers' alongside the regular Everard's beers. Small cosy unspoilt locals' pub in a wine bar dominated area.

SWAN & RUSHES.  (Infirmary Square / Oxford Street, LE1 5WR)
At least 6 real ales on plus many imported bottled beers. Has regular Beer Festivals. LocAle. Now sells home made pizza.

The Pub. (12 New Walk, Leicester LE1 6TF)
Up to 15 Real Ales on sale only from micro breweries. LocAle "Pub of the Year 2011"

BLACK BOY.  (35, Albion Street, LE1 6LB)
Bass. 2001 refurbishment did not ruin its interesting interior. Currently a little run down and lease soon to be up for sale

KING RICHARD III.  (Highcross Street, LE1 4NN)
Everards pub returned to “Real Ale” in recent times after 40 years of KEG. Many historical treasures inside.

MOLLY O'GRADY'S. (14 Hotel Street, LE1 5AW)
Formerly the Saracen's Head. Mock Irish pub serving Everard's beers. Beer is o.k. Can't say the same for the pub interior.

CRITERION (44 Millstone Lane, LE1 5JN)
Up to 8 Real Ales on sale from micros. Good value home made Pizzas available until 9.00pm. Has regular beer festivals. Leicester CAMRA City “Pub Of The Year” 2006 and overall "Pub of the Year" 2007, 2008 and 2009. LocAle

SHIP INN. (Soar Lane, LE3 5DE)
This 1930’s two roomed local, a former Shipstone’s pub, now sells Barnsley Bitter brewed at Oakwell and Old Tom, both remarkably cheaply.

SHAKESPEARE'S HEAD  (Southgates, LE1 5SH)
Owned by the Barnsley Brewery. Barnsley Bitter and Old Tom sold remarkably cheaply. Recently refurfurbished tastefully. An excellent example of an unspoilt 1960's building.

PHOENIX ARTS BAR & CAFE
(Closed).
 

20   THE RUTLAND & DERBY ARMS (Millstone Lane, LE1 5JN) 
The first pub in the City to have in house Deli. Full Everards Beer range plus a couple of guests.

THE SALMON  (13 Butt Close Lane, LE1 4SX)
This former Banks’ pub is now privately owned and sells a range of 6 Real Ales, from all over the country. Opens until 6pm on Sundays and 8pm on Mondays, The rest of the week are normal pub ours. Well worth a visit.

PUMP AND TAP  (42 Duns Lane, LE3 5LX) 
Destroyed by Leicester City Council and De Montford University. Demolished.

THE LONGSTOP (Not on above map) (9 Churchgate, LE1 3AL) 
New venture by former Globe Landlord selling 6 guest real ales and cider, food menu available.
