What is LocAle?

CAMRA LocAle is a new initiative that promotes pubs stocking locally brewed real ale. The scheme builds on a growing consumer demand for quality local produce and an increased awareness of 'green' issues.

The CAMRA LocAle scheme was created in 2007 by CAMRA's Nottingham branch which wanted to help support the tradition of brewing within Nottinghamshire, following the demise of local brewer Hardys and Hansons.

Everyone benefits from local pubs stocking locally-brewed real ale…

  • Public houses as stocking local real ales can increase pub visits
  • Consumers who enjoy greater beer choice and diversity
  • Local brewers who gain from increased sales
  • The local economy because more money is spent and retained locally
  • The environment due to fewer ‘beer miles' resulting in less road congestion and pollution
  • Tourism due to an increased sense of local identity and pride - let's celebrate what makes our locality different.

The Scheme

Pubs are given point of sale material and window stickers to promote their accreditation. We will create a list of all pubs involved on this website. Download leaflet for licensees

Here in Leicester

Whilst we do not have so much of a problem as the Nottingham area, quite a lot of our County pubs are in the situation where they are given little choice as to what they can sell. Beers often take the same route whereby they are trunked to distribution depots and then ferried to our pubs.

Here the 2009 Leicester Beer Festival will showcase over 70 beers that are produced within a 25 mile radius of our beer festival. You may not realise that some of the breweries are so close. Any pub participating in the scheme will be allowed beers from within 25 miles as the crow flies from their location to qualify. LocAle Brewery List

We would welcome comments from members of the licensed trade as well as others to see if a scheme like LocAle would benefit the Leicester area.

CAMRA is aware that many pubs cannot buy in the beers they would like to sell, and their customers would like to drink, because of restrictive ties but ways can often be found to get locally brewed beers onto the bar if the will is there, such as through the direct delivery scheme operated by SIBA (The Society of Independent Brewers). We can also advise pubs as to which breweries are local to them and how to make contact with the brewers.

Pubs interested in the scheme can speak to our Pubs Officer on 07769 166386.
