April 2001
The Leicester Gateway
The Leicester Camra Pub of The Month for April 2001 was The Leicester Gateway on Gateway Street. Landlord Brian Rigby was presented with one of the prized and attractive PoM plaques for display in the pub. Since opening in 2000 the pub has shown what the Tynemill pub group can do in Leicester, with a winning combination of 6 real ales, continental beers and all day food. The pub has proved very popular with its De Montfort University catchment and with sports goers. The no smoking area and air conditioning are appreciated by those who like clean air and not tobacco in their pint! A full article on the pub appeared in the January 2001 edition of The Leicester Drinker.
The presentation evening was an opportunity for convivial conversation made even more pleasant by a buffet provided by the pub. The beers were all in excellent condition, reflecting the consistent beer quality that the pub is now maintaining.
Just before going to press news broke that Brian had left The Gateway and the Tynemill Group. Leicester Camra would like to extend their thanks and appreciation for the hard work he put into successfully establishing The Gateway, and the addition it made to real ale choice in Leicester. His boundless energy will be missed. In addition he organised a real ale beer club amongst the students plus regular brewery tours. The most recent was by train to the Oakham Brewery and probably the most infamous was to Edinburgh, about which only a few of those present appear to have any functioning memory.
We wish Brian well in his future ventures and send him our thanks.
