The Globe

The evening of Wednesday February 26th saw another city centre pub receive Leicester CAMRA's coveted Pub of the Month award. This time it was the turn of what must be Everards' flagship Leicester pub, The Globe in Silver Street.

Besides being one of the City's most historic drinking establishments, the Globe is promoted as 'the town pub for locals'. Rest assured, however, that this is not a reference to Royston Vasey (of 'League of Gentlemen' fame). Whilst the Globe has always enjoyed a reputation as a traditional city centre pub, in April 2001 it was given a major refurbishment. Far from destroying the 'traditional' concept, the alterations enhanced it and, whilst improvements such as additional drinking areas and new toilets resulted, existing features such as the gas-lit snug and Victorian tiled flooring were retained and restored.

At the helm is Landlord, Hugh Kerr, assisted by his partner, Janet Grimshaw. Hugh and Janet were both born in Scotland. Having worked initially in the food and retail industries, it is, perhaps, no surprise that they should have found their way into the licensed trade. Janet previously ran two pubs in the north of England before the couple moved to Leicester in May 1999, to commence employment with Everards Brewery as relief managers. In December that year, they took over management of the Globe, becoming tenants in December 2002. They must be doing a good job, since Everards have now appointed Janet to manage their Rutland & Derby Arms, a short walk away!

The Globe always has a wide range of well-kept Everards beers on tap, with seasonal offerings when available. This was borne out on the night of the award presentation, when CAMRA members were joined by senior Everards management, including Nick Lloyd (Managing Director), Graham Giblet (Head Brewer) and Graham Yates (Brunswick Derby Brewer & Licensee, ex Everards Quality Control).  Graham Yates' attendance was especially appreciated, since he provided a barrel of the Brunswick's 'Triple Hop' for the occasion.
