GOOD BEER GUIDE

January 2003

The Vaults

The Leicester Camra Pub of The Month for January 2003 was The Vaults on Wellington Street, Leicester. The pub had previously received the award in September 1997 and is widely regarded as the only establishment in the city where you never need drink the same beer twice!

Phil Spencer had just completed a four year stint as manager of the Vaults, so it was an emotional occasion when he was presented with the award plaque on Wednesday, 22nd January. By selling seven beers all from small breweries from as far afield as Orkneys and Plymouth, all in excellent condition, he was also voted as Leicester Pub of the Year 2002 and received a second plaque in recognition of this on the same night.

Phil is a unique and genuine character, but conscientious and dedicated to his work. He also managed to get through 5000 different beers in his four years at the Vaults. We wish  'Spenno' well with his new career on the railways. Paul Summers, who has been assisting Phil for some time, has taken over as manager.
