22nd
June was a memorable evening for the 16 CAMRA members gathered
in The Tudor on Tudor Road, Leicester. Even more memorable
for Licensees, Gail and Glyn Lovell. They were being presented
with the “Pub Of The Month” award.
On what
was one of the hottest days of the year so far, we set about
quenching our thirsts on the Beacon and Tiger Best Bitter on
sale, both of which were superb. At 9.15 or thereabouts, I set
about presenting Gail and Glynn with their award. I mentioned
that long before becoming our Branch Chairman, The Tudor had
become one of my locals back in 1984 when Chris and Tony
Hartshorn were the Licensees. It had been one of the original 10
Everards pubs to convert to “Real Ale” back in 1978. I had
seen many changes in The Tudor over the years, different
customers, different Licensees, some good some bad. It had also
had an internal structural change. More importantly for the
evening, the fact that Gail and Glynn have restored The Tudor to
being a pub serving the community once more, something it hadn’t
done for some time.
As I
presented the “Pub Of The Month” certificate to Gail and Glynn,
Gail said “We would like to thank CAMRA for this award. We have
only been at The Tudor for 10 months and trade has increased
immensely. It is nice to be recognised for the hard work we have
done since taking The Tudor on”. She continued by thanking her
loyal regular customers and hoped that they, along with CAMRA,
would continue to support The Tudor.
We rounded
the night off with a selection of sandwiches before we all
drifted off home. Everyone present had a thoroughly enjoyable
evening. In recognition of The Tudor’s high standards, it will
be included in the 2006 Good Beer Guide (subject to the editor’s
discretion).
