Pub Of The Month June 2007
- The Black Horse, Leicester
Leicester
CAMRA’s Pub of the Month for June was the Black Horse on
Braunstone Gate. A well deserved winner too. On Wednesday 20th
June some of us attended a presentation night which coincided
with charity auction on behalf of King Richard III School and a
regular quiz night.
The proceedings commenced at 8.30 pm as landlord Phil Gomersall
reduced the price of the beer for the night to £1.79 for any
pint. Soon the quiz started, with 60 questions being asked
throughout the evening.
At the first break we made our presentation to Phil and a good
range of food was provided on the bar. We congratulated Phil for
his good beer and the strong customer base he has built and
maintained. In an area of bistros, bars and clubs this is quite
an achievement. Phil replied with thanks to his customers, his
staff, particularly Amy who has been with him for three years,
CAMRA and Everards, who were represented by Matt Crehan,
Everards BDM (Business Development Manager). Matt said that, in
the short time he had been in post, he had been impressed by
Phil’s passion for Real Ale, keeping a very good cellar and for
the range of beers requested and stocked.
Later on the charity auction was held. Many donated items were
up for grabs and the grand total raised was £252 for the school.
Well done everyone who took part. The evening finished with the
final 20 questions. The CAMRA team did not come last. All in all
we had an extremely good night. Everyone was friendly and the
atmosphere was relaxed and cheerful.
Congratulations must go to Phil and his staff for an excellent
night and for winning the Pub of the Month award; also to James
for asking a brilliant quiz and being auctioneer. We enjoyed the
night tremendously. Well done the Black Horse, Braunstone Gate.
Sue Wilkins.
